Chapter Seven
âShit!â
Iâm startled awake by the angry voice of my road trip companion. It is followed immediately by the barking of the furry little creature that has taken up residence on my lap.
âShit, shit, shit!â he yells again as he bangs his fists against the steering wheel. I notice that we are slowing quickly as the vehicle jerks while we pull to the side of the road.
âWhatâs going on?â I ask groggily.
âIâm sorry, kid. Itâs all my own damned fault.â
âWhat is?â I ask, still confused about whether Iâm currently experiencing reality, or yet another dream.
âGas. I forgot to keep an eye on the gas.â
âShit!â I yell as I remember that was one of the first things I had intended to do after we had gotten out of Chicago. After all that happened on the way out of the city, I completely forgot about it.
âIâm so sorry, kid. I should have been paying attention, but well, thereâs notââ
âNo, itâs my fault, Guy. I had noticed it, but forgot about it.â
âWell, either way, I should have noticed. Itâs something us professional drivers should do the second we step behind the wheel. Guess the storm got me all distracted.â
âStill, I should have said something.â
âWell, I guess that puts us both in the doghouse on this one. No offense there, Stormy.â
âShit.â
âNo sense harping on it any longer, kid. Weâll just have to push forward.â
âWell, how far did we get?â I ask, knowing we shouldnât have gotten very far with how little gas we had left.
âWeâre just outside of Mount Pleasant, right across the Wisconsin border.â
âReally?â I ask in surprise. âThat means weâre not that far from Milwaukee.â
âNot too far, but I wouldnât want to walk there.â
âWell, no, but maybeââ I cut myself off as I pull my phone out of my pocket. Maybe the big city being so close could mean reception. âNevermind,â I say as I notice my phone is now completely out of power.
âWell, the stormâs let up a little bit. Maybe we could hop around from car to car and see if anyone else is stuck here on the road that might know the area a bit better. Thereâs gotta be a gas station somewhere nearby.â
âNot a bad idea,â I say with hesitation. Anyone still sitting in a car has a better chance of being a zombie than being helpful, but Iâm not sure what other options we have right now.
Guy jumps out of the driverâs side door, followed by Stormy, and starts looking into the window of each car along the roadside. Stormy begins whimpering.
âAw, come on now,â Guy comforts the puppy. âIf you need to take a leak, just take a leak.â
I notice that the sky is beginning to lighten. A glance at the clock on the radio shows that itâs already 4am. Pretty crazy to think that Iâve only been living this new post-armageddon life for a couple hours. Seems like forever. That realization brings back my dedication to finding Zelda.
âHey, Bert,â Guy yells at me. âGonna help Stormy find a spot to take a leak.
